Please note - this learning cohort will run for roughly 6 months. Once your attendance has been accepted, please register for each individual event in the series below.

The Microsoft Reactor team are excited to bring to you a free customised learning pathway for mums coming back to work in the tech industry. After a few years out caring for kids it’s easy to feel out of practice, behind on the latest tools and technologies, or lacking confidence.

This dedicated cohort, just for mums coming back to work, will focus on development tools, version control essentials, web and cloud technology, and modern team practices.
Held online over 6 months, participants will access monthly topical seminars with tech experts, online hands-on learning modules, and office hours to get one-on-one help and mentorship.

Whether you’re a mum newly back at work or preparing to return to work this cohort program is perfect for upskilling, learning the latest tch, and gaining confidence in a friendly and supportive environment.

After a few years out caring for kids it’s easy to feel out of practice, behind on the latest tools and technologies, or lacking confidence. This dedicated cohort, just for mums coming back to work, will focus on development tools, version control essentials, web and cloud technology, and modern team practices. For 6 months (one session per month), participants will access monthly topical seminars with tech experts, online hands-on learning modules, and office hours to get one-on-one help and mentorship. Whether you’re a mum newly back at work or preparing to return to work this cohort program is perfect for upskilling, learning the latest tech, and gaining confidence in a friendly and supportive environment. What you will be learning • Work with Python in VS Code and GitHub • Deploy a python webserver to the cloud, with GitHub and Azure • Teamwork and testing – How containerisation and CI/CD simplify the dev cycle • Azure Fundamentals Preparation • Bringing a project and your career to life – how Agile methodology is used in the workplace and how to show off your best side with LinkedIn. Pre-Requisites: • This cohort is targeted at mums who have taken time away from tech • Who previously worked in the tech industry before time away with kids • Completed tertiary level computing education before time away with kids • Have undertaken tech boot camps, or similar, giving them a solid understanding of programming and general applications, whilst caring for kids. A minimum level of technical understanding will be needed to complete the cohort program, with a grounding on programming. Programming parts of the course will be conducted in Python, an online course will be available for those who are familiar with languages other than Python, to help with the transition. How much time will you need to commit? You will need to be available for ALL the below dates and times. Your Speaker Victor Olet - Microsoft Student Ambassador Victor is a PhD student at Curtin University working in the renewable energy sector, researching the generation of liquid biofuel to replace fossil fuel-derived transport fuels. He enjoys the sciences of chemistry and biology, and also their enhancement through computational techniques. Victor is also passionate about education, and wants to support the current and next generations by sharing his knowledge and excitement with students through interesting pedagogies, enhanced learning experiences, and great tech tips that give learners a leg up.

Deploy a Python Web App to the Cloud, with GitHub and Azure

Building on last week’s set up, we'll cover some web development basics to get our own Python web server running from GitHub, host on Azure. Learn about the benefits cloud compute offers, and how to get it set up for your needs. This session will explore how to build web apps in Python's most popular frameworks, Flask and Django, and then deploy those apps to Azure App Service. Your Speaker Pamela Fox is a Cloud Advocate in Python at Microsoft. Previously, she was a lecturer for UC Berkeley and the creator of the computer programming curriculum for Khan Academy. Who is it aimed at? It's best suited for attendees with previous experience with either Python or web app frameworks (Rails, NodeJS, etc.), who are interested in hosting web apps on Azure. Leave with a set of resources to learn more and consider getting your AZ-900 Azure Fundamentals certification. Your Speaker Sonia is a New Zealander at heart who made Brisbane, Australia home. Yes, she still supports the All Blacks. Sonia's I.T. career of over 20 years started in Enterprise Systems Administration and Architecture for Banking, Government and Defence, focused on Microsoft and IBM software platforms. Her last Enterprise role was as a Service Delivery Manager for a large systems integrator, responsible for IBM developers & system administrators in multiple locations. Deciding to start a family, she quit her day job and started a business dedicated to Small and Medium Business customers which provided technical projects and support and helped customers to successfully adopt new technologies the right way, achieving great business results. Here she dived into collaboration, productivity and the future of work (including AI and bots). Sonia was recognised for her community involvement so Microsoft awarded her as an MVP in the Office Servers & Services and Windows Insider categories. she regularly engaged with other I.T. partners to help them keep up with the rapid pace of change in our industry and authored several courses at Pluralsight. Now she has landed in my dream job – as a Cloud Advocate for Microsoft. Sonia writes online and speak at events, appear in guest blogs & podcasts and run presentations & training (both in person & online). With even greater involvement in technical communities of IT Pros, she talks to them about their challenges operating workloads in the Cloud, on-premises or in hybrid environments.
